Peter Shepard: On January 18, 2022, Peter Shepard passed away of organ failure after a sudden illness and several days in hospital.  He returned home as he wished and Rosie, Michael and his puppy were at his side as he passed as peacefully as possible. Peter was 76 years old.

Peter served as a nurse in the Navy and attended St. Paul Academy, Summit High School (1965) and University of the Pacific.  Peter joined Mentor Corporation very early and was one of the first employees in Minneapolis.  When Mentor acquired the Goleta- based Heyer Schulte division of American Hospital Supply Corp in 1984, Peter moved to Santa Barbara and made it his home for over 35 years.  Peter was an avid firearms enthusiast, held a Federal Firearms License and shared his love of shooting sports with anyone who had an interest.  He was a big advocate of the second amendment, all the shooting sports, Winchester Gun Club, while encouraging strict adherence to both safety and gun laws.  Peter recently sold his home in Santa Barbara and moved to Minnesota to be closer to his family.  He is survived by the love of his life, Rosie, and his son Michael.

Peter cared deeply about doing the right thing.  He was always fun to be around.  He was loved by all of his friends, co-workers and family and will be missed.

Peter was one of the few WCGC members that held a Federal Firearms License and many members purchased firearms and Ammo through Peter.  He was a big advocate of the second amendment, the shooting sports, Winchester Gun Club, and strict adherence to both safety and gun regulations and laws. We will miss you Peter and are sending love, thoughts, and prayers to Rosie and Michael during this tough time.

May has arrived and the year is almost half over. Where has time gone?

Last month we had our first Sporting Clays Fun Shoot of the year. It was a great turnout with 42 shooters. Congratulations to Adam Manchester with the high overall score of 92 out of 100. Thank you Shalhoob for a great lunch!

We are planning our Summer Trap League. The first day will be June 2, 2022. Come on out on Thursday evenings this summer for the Trap League. It is for all skill levels and we have weekly prizes. Plus: Belt Buckles for HOA, A, B & C Class and Rookie of the Year! A separate email will be sent out shortly with more information. Hope to see you there!

With the completion of the 200 Yard Range project, we have posted new WCGC 200 Yard Protocols. The club has spent a lot of time, money and volunteer man hours for this improvement. The protocols are for the members safety and enjoyment. We must require that everyone follow the new rules. Importantly, Do not put rocks out on the range! They can cause ricochets and become a hazard. Rakes, shovels and trashcans are on the range. Hopefully it goes without saying, please clean up all brass after each use the range.

Let's keep the WCGC 200 Yard Range safe and looking nice for everyone to use!

On behalf of the club president, the board and myself, we would like to thank everyone that participated in our March Workday. We had a tremendous turnout and was able to complete many much needed projects. It was inspiring to see so many members come out to help make the club a better place for everyone. We would also like to thank SB Chicken Ranch for a great lunch, it was enjoyed by all!

We would like to especially thank Santa Barbara Surfacing for the use of the dump truck, Milpas Rental for furnishing the skid steers, Quin Machinery for use of a dozer and Art Damiani and his crew for doing a great job of painting the clubhouse.

The 200 yard Range project is now complete. The Handgun Range and 200 yard Range are now isolated ranges. No need to coordinate cease fires between the two ranges. A big thank you to Ryan Burns for heading this project up!

April 2nd we will be having our first Sporting Clays of the year. As well as our first Lunch at the Range. We look forward to to seeing you there!

We will be making our quarterly gate code change shortly. The new gate code will be in effect on April 2, 2022 at 4 PM. Please look for a separate email on April 1, 2022 with the new gate code to those members who qualify. Please remember that sharing the gate code with persons not eligible to possess it is against Range Rules.

All ranges will be closed to the public on Sunday, April 17, 2022, Easter Sunday. Members may still use the ranges, but no Range Staff will be on site.

On April 22, 2022 we will be hosting a Rattlesnake Aversion Training for Dogs. See attached flyer below for more information.

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter.

Five Stand is very similar to Sporting Clays in that a wide variety of targets are thrown. No two five-stand events are exactly alike. There are five “stands” or stations to shoot from. There are 6 traps that throw targets in different presentations. Participants shoot in turn at each of the 5 stands and various combinations of targets are thrown from the traps. There is a menu card that will advise the shooter of the sequence of targets and whether its a single, report or true pair.

Five Stand is a great way to get a Sporting Clays like experience in a small amount of space, with very little walking.

    ABOUT THE TRAINING

Each dog is individually trained by Fred Presson of High On Kennels. High On Kennels specializes in training hunting dogs. In addition, Fred trains thousands of dogs each year to avoid rattlesnakes. If you haven't seen this type of training before you will be amazed!

    IMPORTANT:

    • Your dog must be at least six months old to participate. It would be very helpful if your dog has basic obedience training, it will be more difficult to train.
    • Check in and training times can take between 20 and 60 minutes.
    • Advanced payment of $85 per dog is required. 1 Dog-$85/2 Dogs-$170/3 Dogs-$255
    • Credit card payments are processed through Square or PayPal. Your credit card bill will show Rattlesnake Aversion for Dogs or Debbie Sharpton as the payee.
    • No refunds will be issued for cancellations received within one week of the event.

    Training Process

Our training clinics are conducted in a safe, humane, and controlled environment ensuring the safety of your dog, people, and rattlesnakes. The snakes are strategically placed in three stations and the dogs are fitted with an electronic training collar. The dog is led through the training course by the professional trainer while you observe from a short distance away. Your dog is allowed to encounter the rattlesnake at which point the dog is stimulated using the electronic collar. The training process is repeated as many times necessary to assure you that your dog will understand the sight, sound, and smell of a rattlesnake (they have a distinct odor that dogs can discern from other snakes). Certain "refresher" trainings (year 2 and beyond) require only one pass of the course, they remembered! That's what we want to see!

The training session is one-on-one and initially will be repeated several times to make sure the dog understands. The trainer recommends three consecutive annual trainings to secure the sight, scent and smell of a rattlesnake, and the aversion to it in your dog's mind. The check-in, possible wait (some dogs take more time to train than others) and training takes approximately 20-60 minutes.

You will receive a confirmation email after you complete the purchase. If you need assistance registering your dog(s) you can contact me at 805-338-8278 or debbie.sharpton@gmail.com

    Register at:
    https://rattlesnakeclinic.as.me/

Directions for Registering One or More Dogs

    1. Choose which appointment type you want based on how many dogs you want to register and where you want to attend.

    2. Select a date (in bold type). Choose a start time. The system will block off the full amount of time for you. If you want to space your dogs out for your own personal reasons you will have to register one at a time.

Appointment times are presented at 8 minute intervals to establish the training order only. Actual training times vary.

March has arrived and Spring is right around the corner. We have some exciting things happening this month.

The Board of Directors has approved building a barrier between the handgun range and the 200 yard range. This will eliminate the safety hazard of going down range past the 100 yard mark on the 200 yard range and eliminate the need for both ranges to be on cease fire. We look forward to the installation!

Sunday, March 20, 2022 is the Spring Equinox. All ranges will be closed for shooting.

We will be having a WCGC Workday on Sunday, March 20, 2022. A FREE Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch Lunch will be provided by the club and each member who participates will also receive a $25 gift card. Thank you for your help!

A separate email will be sent out for sign-ups. We hope to see you then!

The Ventura Gun Show will be March 5th & 6th, 2022. WCGC will have a Booth at the show. We have $1 off coupons at the Club House as well as at the Rifle & Pistol Range Shack. If you go to the Gun Show, stop by and say Hi!

Remember March 13th, Daylight Savings Time begins. Dont forget to move your clocks forward 1 hour.

Pursuant to our use permit with the USFS, all ranges will be closed to all shooting activities on Sunday, March 20, 2022, in recognition of the SPRING EQUINOX.

On Sunday, March 20, 2022 WCGC will be having a RANGE WORK DAY starting at 8:00 am. We will be doing needed maintenance to all the ranges along with a much needed painting of the range houses and work on the 200 yard range.

In appreciation of your participation, all participants will receive a FREE LUNCH along with a $25 WCGC Gift Card. This gift card can be applied to your membership renewal, club merchandise or shooting fees.

We will be sending out a reminder email shortly along with a sign up for the WORK DAY.

Thank you for helping make WCGC a great place to shoot!

February is here already, seems like the start of the year is flying by. This past month we were able to get the berm at the 100 yard range repaired from the rain erosion we had in December. A huge THANK YOU to Ryan Burns for volunteering his time to do this.

On Sunday, February 13th, Valentines Eve, WCGC will be offering "Bring your Love" (Spouse, Girlfriend, Boyfriend) to the range and get two for the price of one for Trap or Skeet. Ammo not included. Or two for the price of one at the Rifle & Handgun Range. This will be a great way to spend a day with your partner just before Valentines Day. Remember to come early so you don't miss the Super Bowl!

On February 19th at WCGC 200 yard Range there will be a Family/Youth "Learn to Shoot" Event. Event to be hosted by Paratus Training and will be a great way to bring the family up and get some great firearms safety and instruction. We understand that the best way to be safe is to be informed. A safe, friendly, and professional environment can make all the difference. Come join us for a day of safety and fun. Contact Rob Holcombe at 805-259-8542 for more information. Event starts at 10 AM sharp.

Remember when at the Range and you are finished shooting, please CLEAN UP. This includes brass and spent casings, used targets and frames, etc.... As members, we should strive to keep the ranges in as good or better condition as we found them. Thank you!

Most memberships are due this month, check your membership expiration date and renew today!

We would like to wish a Happy New Year to all our members! We are looking forward to another exciting New Year filled with safe shooting! We have some great events for January with even more events in the works.

We have recently updated our website (www.wcgc.org). Check out our updated site, especially the new information on Firearm Safety (www.wcgc.org/Firearm-Safety). We have posted important Firearm Safety Information to share with you. Please pass on this important information to friends and family.

WCGC would like to THANK everyone who participated in the Food Drive in December! We were able to bring over 10 LARGE BOXES filled with Food Items to Local Families in need. Thank you kindly!

The Gate Combination will be changing on January 2, 2022. A separate email will be sent to all qualifying members. Please check your email tomorrow for the updated Gate Code for those who qualify.

Reminder, it is a violation of Club Rules to give the combination out to anyone. If someone arrives at the Range and asks for the Gate Code, please refer them to the Range Manager. We have had a couple instances in December where non-qualifying members obtained the Gate Code. Please help keep the Club secure on member days.

Another Reminder, Handguns are prohibited on the 100 yard Range. Please only use Handguns on the Handgun Range.

Thank you to all Members keeping our Range Safe and Secure for all of us!
